I first became involved in local government in April 2004, encouraged by a friend who was Mayor at the time. I was elected to the Rhinelander City Council, where I served from 2004 to 2018, and later to the Oneida County Board for two terms toward the end of that period. Throughout my tenure, I contributed to numerous local boards and committees and engaged in statewide initiatives with the League of Wisconsin Municipalities. This included testifying before a Wisconsin State Assembly committee on legislation involving property taxation and meeting many times with our legislators on issues affecting local government.
One time, I saved the City over $1million pushing for (successfully) refinancing a prior-service pension obligation
During my time in local government, we aggressively pursued grants for a lot of bike and pedestrian infrastructure, revitalized the historic downtown, particularly Brown Street, created the PRAT to fund road and transportation infrastructure, helped Printpack relocate, helped Expera expand, bought Heal Creek, saved the Holmboe Conifer Forest, and even delivered real property tax decreases: https://starjournalnow.com/2016/11/10/city-finance-committee-forwards-2017-budget/
